A Testimonal from Jaon Nash

How I wish I could stand on Table Mountain and shout out to all Breast Cancer patients to use Sportron supplements during and after their chemo treatment. After my first “Red Devil” treatment (I preferred to call it tomato juice) on 24th March 2009, I looked and felt awful! Some of the side effects of chemo that I experienced were exhaustion, pretty bad headaches mostly in the evenings, great big sores in my nostrils, on my lips, inside my mouth and that yuckie metallic taste in my mouth resulting in loss of appetite. Of course my hair started to fall out exactly 13 days after the first “tomato juice”. Not a pretty sight but with the phenomenal love & support of my husband, Paul, children Jackie, Darren & daughter-in-law Elise, our grandson Matthew, family & friends I thought I would get through it… Jane Burger came into my life a week before my second “tomato juice”. Her son Kyle asked me if I had heard of Sportron (Kyle has his own handy man business and was doing a job for us) as they have supplements that would help me through my treatments. I was very pessimistic and told him so, but Jane could come by and I would sort of listen to her! Poor Jane walked into my home with me standing crossed arms, not giving her much attention and looking and feeling like uuuuuuggggghhhh!!! Of course I did not believe her and asked her to come back that evening when Paul was at home. He immediately saw what I refused to believe, encouraging me to give them a try. I faxed the information on the 4 products to my oncologist at the Donald Gordon in Parktown, because I was not going to take anything unless she O.K. them! To my absolute astonishment my doctor confirmed that I could take the Omegatone 3, Ultragard Forte, Phytogard and Calcium Forte (not the Calcitone as it contains too much Vitamin C)! She also said I couldn’t be on anything better. Of course I immediately started with the supplements and used the Tooth Gel on the sores in my mouth and nostrils throughout the day. To my utter surprise they disappeared within 3 days WOW! What a difference I started feeling a bit human again! When I went to my surgeon at the Park Lane Clinic for my check-up she also confirmed that I could use Sportron. She was very pleased to see that I was doing so well during the 6 months of chemo. I simply cannot believe how much Sportron has helped me. I had a kidney infection in July and my oncologist prescribed antibiotics which didn’t really help so I used Uritron and again felt better within days. These past 14 months have just flown by and tomorrow 28th May 2010 I have my second last Hersepton treatment (it’s an antibody of which I have had 15) as my breast cancer was genetic and HER2C positive. I had a mastectomy in February 2009, it seems like a life time away! I’m so glad to that I have an awesome new friend who has been through this journey with me. Thank you Jane for taking me for my treatments, your love and support is unbelievable. For all the laughter that you brought into my life and to those of the other chemo patients, thank you! Take great care of yourselves. Regards Joan Joan Nash 27th May 2010 Waterford Estate East, Waterford, Fourways.

Good Chocolate News!

Is this too good to be true? Boston based researchers have reported that flavanol-rich chocolate may boost blood flow in the brain and reduce the risk of progressive deterioration of intellectual functions such as memory and stroke. The study, examining 34 healthy elderly volunteers, showed that two weeks of regular flavanol rich cocoa consumption, providing 900mg of cocoa flavanols, resulted in a significant increase in peak brain blood flow response in the middle brain. Although the study sample was small, the results reinforce previously published research in healthy young women, and suggest that flavanol-rich cocoa intake directly increases blood flow in the brain. The link between cocoa flavanols and heart health is thought to be through the improved blood flow via increased production of nitric oxide, a molecule that tells muscles to relax. The researchers think that the beneficial effects from cocoa that are seen in the brain depend on this improved production of nitric oxide. (Reference: Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment. Volume 4, Pages 433-440“Cerebral blood flow response to flavanol-rich cocoa in healthy elderly humans” Authors: F.A. Sorond, L.A. Lipsitz, N.K. Hollenberg, N.D.L. Fisher) Although this is interesting research coming through, it is worth noting firstly the sample size was small, secondly no control group was included and finally the study was supported by confectionery giant Mars. This doesn't necessarily mean the work is suspect, but it should be noted! Even if cocoa flavanols boost the blood flow in the brain and are beneficial for heart health, overweight and obesity do not improve heart health. Extra weight simply puts strain on the heart. Chocolates have a high fat and kilo joule (calorie) content and eating too many chocolates can lead to overweight and obesity. Remember it’s important to find the balance!

A Formative Opinion on FORM

When it comes to world rankings, South Africa is at the top of the list in at least two categories – rugby and tax collection. I know… of all the things to be great at, tax collection had to be one of them! On the flipside of that however, is our national micronutrient status, an area where we’re not so remarkable. In 1999 the department of health launched a national food consumption survey to get to grips with the problem and based on those dismal results, issued a mandate that required all manufacturers of maize and wheat products to fortify their fare with the key micronutrients: Vitamin A, Iron and Zinc. A few years later the survey was repeated to determine how effective the fortification program was, and some of the notable results were as follows: Two out of three children and one out of four women nationally have poor vitamin A status. One out of five women and one out of seven children had a poor iron status. Nationally, 45% of children had an inadequate zinc status. These stats alone are cause for grave concern – but what was most disturbing, was that when compared to results from the first survey the prevalence of poor vitamin A and iron status in children appears to have gotten worse! So despite the government’s best efforts to reverse the deficiencies in our people through a food fortification program, the problem has been exacerbated … and judging by the recommendations in the report, they’re not sure what to do about it. For instance they’re suggesting the introduction of a national day for single high dose vitamin A supplements! It’s not enough that we have Workers day, Women’s day, Youth day and more – we now need Vitamin A day too …? The reality is, no amount of food fortification drives or reminders via SMS to take your vitamins (another desperate suggestion) are going to make any difference in correcting the micronutrient deficiencies in South Africa unless they understand the most fundamental aspect of supplementation … and that is simply that “form matters.” Form matters? Sure, just ask the All Blacks – who’ve been off form for a few years, or Roger Federer who knows that ranking means nothing on the day of the Wimbledon final – it’s all about whether you’re on form or not. Ok, that may be stretching the illustration a little too far, so bringing it back to the subject at hand – the form in which you take your supplements makes all the difference in the world. In nature, vitamins occur in fruits and veggies in a biological complex – molecularly bound to a whole range of co-factors which are vital for their proper functioning as vitamins. Vitamins cannot be isolated from their complexes and still perform their specific life functions within the cells. When isolated into artificial commercial forms, like the form used in the food fortification program - vitamins are unable to function effectively, and according to some scientists should not even be called vitamins… and that’s a reason why the program hasn’t worked! The same could be said for minerals too (think iron in spinach) which is why your mother always told you to eat your greens. She may never have explained it to you this way, but she knew that unless vitamins and minerals were molecularly interwoven into a food complex there was just no way your body could absorb and use them effectively. OK … it was probably more maternal instinct than scientific knowledge – but she just somehow knew it was true, even if she didn’t know exactly why. The problem we’re faced with today of course is that most of the “fresh” fruit and veggies we’re picking off the shelves (instead of off the tree) are deplete of many of these micronutrients, thanks to intensive farming on nutrient-depleted soils or storing ‘fresh’ food for longer. Refining food (turning brown into white) also strips away valuable nutrients. Today the emphasis is on appearance, storability and transportability, with far less stress on the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables. How times have changed. We think of an orange as a constant, but the reality is it isn't… you would have to eat around eight oranges today to get the same amount of vitamin A your grandparents got from a single orange, and you would need to eat about five to get the same level of iron. So now what!? Our bodies need vitamins and minerals to function effectively, but most people are not getting enough of those micronutrients from fruit and veggies today, so we need to supplement. Most vitamin and mineral supplements today however, are sold in an isolated form (outside of their natural biological complexes) and are thus not recognized or absorbed by the body Sounds like we’re in a pickle, doesn’t it? Thanks to FoodState® technology, we’re not. Food-what? FoodState® technology is the name given to a proprietary process that re-natures vitamins and minerals into a biological complex, similar to the form that they occur in nature and in so doing vastly improves their absorption, retention and utilization by your body. That’s what separates Sportron’s range of supplements from all other supplements on shelf these days… pure and simple. Most other brands of vitamins use formulas, packaging and pricing to differentiate themselves in an over saturated market … Sportron’s differentiating factor is simply “form” - because Form Matters. Someone should tell the Department of Health.

Reach your dreams through your goals in 2014!

All top performers work from a list. They are continuous “list makers.” Perhaps the best time management tool of all is a checklist that you create by writing down every step, in order, that you will have to take to achieve an objective on the way to your long-term goal. Once you have a checklist, you work on your list every day, accomplishing each task in order, until the larger goal is achieved. Reach your dreams in 2014!
